Seasonal Allergies 411

An allergen is anything that triggers an imbalance in a person’s immune system.  There are numerous forms of allergens including bee stings, mold, grass, pet hair or dander, cosmetics…  the list goes on and on.  One of the most talked about allergies comes along with the shift into the spring and fall seasons.  Your geographic location will determine the beginning and ending of the pollination seasons.  Spring seasonal allergies are a direct response to blooming flowers and pollen filling the air.  Fall allergies are commonly a result of the August blooming trigger, Ragweed.  Regardless of the season, allergies have the potential to affect your daily life and make you feel downright crummy.

What are some common symptoms of seasonal allergies?

  • Sneezing
  • Swollen, itchy, watery or red eyes
  • Nasal Congestion
  • Headache
  • Rash
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Tightness in the chest

What are possible treatments of seasonal allergies if you are suffering from one or many of the possible symptoms listed above?  Your doctor is the best judge for the most effective treatment for your specific case.  Options include, over the counter antihistamines or a nasal decongestant for a short-term fix to alleviate symptoms.  Please be advised that an antihistamine could potentially cause drowsiness.  If your choice of action is to use over the counter medications, know that you can consult with your local pharmacist to help narrow down the available OTC medication choices to treat your specific symptoms.  When self-treating the effects of allergies, be mindful that you are susceptible to a sinus infection which can only be treated by a physician and prescribed antibiotics.   If these over the counter treatments are not proven to be successful in helping to alleviate your specific symptoms, another options is to begin the treatment of allergy shots or injections.  Allergy shots are commonly recommended to individuals that suffer from allergies for many months of the year and their purpose is to aid in desintsifying the effects of allergies.

If you suspect that you are suffering from allergies, it is advised that you see your primary doctor for evaluation or testing.  With any medical questions, please consult your physician.  This information is in no way a substitution for seeking medical attention or a medical diagnosis.
